You’ve spotted a nest under your eave, in a wall void, or tucked into a hole in the lawn — and before you do anything else, you need to know what built it. Telling a bee nest vs wasp nest apart isn’t just trivia. It changes the safety precautions you take, the removal method that works, and whether you should remove the nest at all.

Spraying a honey bee colony in a wall, for example, is one of the worst outcomes possible: it kills a valuable pollinator colony and leaves pounds of honeycomb rotting inside your house. Meanwhile, treating a yellowjacket nest as harmless because you assumed it was “just bees” can land you in an emergency room.

Almost every bee nest vs wasp nest question can be answered by one question: what material is the nest built from?
Bees never build paper nests. Wasps never build wax comb and never store honey. If you can safely see the material from a distance — binoculars or a phone camera zoom are your friends here — you’re most of the way to an answer.
“Bee” covers thousands of species with very different nesting habits, so it helps to narrow it down.
Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are cavity nesters. Wild colonies move into hollow trees, wall voids, soffits, chimneys, water meter boxes, and empty equipment. Signs:
A honey bee colony in a wall can grow to tens of thousands of bees and store many pounds of honey — which is exactly why the removal approach matters so much.
One common mix-up: a swarm is not a nest. In late spring you may find a football- or basketball-sized cluster of bees hanging on a branch, fence post, or mailbox with no comb at all. That’s a swarm in transit, looking for a permanent home. Swarming bees are typically very docile because they have no nest or brood to defend, and the cluster usually moves on within a day or two. A local beekeeper will often collect it for free.
Bumble bees (Bombus species) build small, messy, annual nests — usually in an existing insulated cavity rather than one they excavate:
Bumble bees are important pollinators and generally reluctant to sting unless the nest is disturbed directly. Several species are in serious decline, and at least one — the rusty patched bumble bee — is federally listed as endangered in the United States. If the nest isn’t in a high-traffic area, leaving it alone until it dies out naturally is usually the best choice.
In early spring, homeowners often panic about “ground bees.” Mining bees (Andrena and relatives) dig individual burrows in dry, sparse lawns and sandy soil:

Carpenter bees (Xylocopa) don’t build a nest you can see. They bore perfectly round holes about half an inch across into bare, unpainted wood — deck rails, fascia boards, pergolas, fence tops — leaving coarse sawdust below and sometimes yellowish staining. The bees look like large bumble bees but with a shiny, hairless black abdomen. Males hover aggressively in front of you but cannot sting at all.
Wasp nests fall into a few clearly distinguishable forms.
Paper wasps (Polistes) build the nest most people picture when they hear “wasp nest”:

This is where the bee-versus-wasp mistake gets dangerous. Yellowjackets are commonly misidentified as bees — some regions even call them “meat bees” — but they aggressively defend the nest, can sting repeatedly, and will pursue an intruder. A vibrating lawn mower or a shovel near a ground nest can trigger dozens of stings.

Bald-faced hornets (Dolichovespula maculata, technically a yellowjacket rather than a true hornet) build the large aerial nest people find most alarming:

The identification matters because the correct response is genuinely different.
If it’s honey bees: do not spray, and do not seal the entrance. Sealing a colony into a wall kills the bees but leaves the comb behind — the honey ferments and seeps through drywall, and the abandoned comb attracts ants, wax moths, and rodents. Instead, contact a local beekeeper or your state beekeeping association; many will perform a live removal and relocation for a modest fee, and some will collect a swarm for free. Your county extension office can point you to someone. A proper structural removal usually involves opening the cavity, extracting the comb, and sealing the void afterward so a new swarm doesn’t move in.
If it’s bumble bees: leave the nest alone if you reasonably can. The colony dies out by fall, doesn’t reuse the site, and pollinates your garden in the meantime. If it’s beside a doorway or in a child’s play area, contact a beekeeping group or extension office about relocation before considering treatment.
If it’s solitary or mining bees: no action needed. Improving turf density and watering habits discourages nesting next spring.
If it’s carpenter bees: the bees themselves aren’t the problem — the tunnels are. Fill holes in fall once activity stops, then paint or seal bare wood, since carpenter bees strongly prefer unfinished surfaces.
If it’s mud daubers: these are beneficial spider predators and almost never sting. Scrape old mud nests off with a putty knife when the wasps are inactive.
If it’s paper wasps: a small, accessible nest away from foot traffic can often be left alone. If it’s over a doorway, treat it after dark when all wasps are on the nest and temperatures have dropped, wear full protective clothing, use a product labeled for wasps from a distance, and have a clear retreat path. If it’s yellowjackets or hornets: be much more cautious. Ground nests and wall-void nests are the two situations where DIY treatment most often goes wrong, because you can’t see the colony, the nest may be larger than you think, and there’s frequently more than one exit.

Safety note: wasp stings can cause severe allergic reactions. Seek emergency medical care immediately for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, widespread hives, or any sting inside the mouth or throat, and for anyone who has received many stings at once.
Can you have bees and wasps in the same nest? No. Each nest belongs to one species. However, yellowjackets sometimes raid weak honey bee colonies for honey and brood, so you may see both insects around a single entrance.
Do wasps make honey? No. Wasps feed larvae protein — insects, spiders, and scavenged meat — and adults sip nectar and sugars, but they don’t produce or store honey. Finding honeycomb settles the identification instantly.
Is a nest in the ground bees or wasps? Either. Many separate soil mounds each with a small, calm bee means solitary mining bees. A single hole with fast, darting, smooth-bodied wasps means yellowjackets — treat that with real caution.
Which is more dangerous? Wasps, generally. Honey bees have barbed stingers and die after stinging, so they sting once. Wasps have smooth stingers and can sting repeatedly, and yellowjackets and hornets defend their nests far more aggressively than most bees do.
If I got stung, can I tell what it was afterward? Sometimes. A stinger left embedded in the skin points to a honey bee. Wasps and bumble bees don’t leave stingers behind.
