Bee Nest vs Wasp Nest: How to Tell the Difference

You’ve spotted a nest under your eave, in a wall void, or tucked into a hole in the lawn — and before you do anything else, you need to know what built it. Telling a bee nest vs wasp nest apart isn’t just trivia. It changes the safety precautions you take, the removal method that works, and whether you should remove the nest at all.

Spraying a honey bee colony in a wall, for example, is one of the worst outcomes possible: it kills a valuable pollinator colony and leaves pounds of honeycomb rotting inside your house. Meanwhile, treating a yellowjacket nest as harmless because you assumed it was “just bees” can land you in an emergency room.

The Fastest Test: What Is the Nest Made Of?

Almost every bee nest vs wasp nest question can be answered by one question: what material is the nest built from?

  • Wax — smooth, slightly greasy, cream to golden to dark brown, arranged in flat vertical sheets of neat hexagonal cells. This is a honey bee nest. Bees secrete beeswax from glands on their abdomens.
  • Paper — gray or tan, dry, brittle, obviously made of chewed wood fibers, sometimes with visible swirled “grain” lines. This is a wasp nest (paper wasps, yellowjackets, or hornets). Wasps chew weathered wood into pulp and build with it.
  • Mud — hard packed soil tubes or lumps stuck to a wall or ceiling. This is a mud dauber or mason wasp nest, or occasionally a mason bee using an existing cavity.
  • Bare soil with a hole — could be either. Keep reading, because this is the most commonly confused case.
  • No nest structure at all, just a round hole in bare wood — that’s a carpenter bee.

Bees never build paper nests. Wasps never build wax comb and never store honey. If you can safely see the material from a distance — binoculars or a phone camera zoom are your friends here — you’re most of the way to an answer.

Bee Nests: What They Look Like

“Bee” covers thousands of species with very different nesting habits, so it helps to narrow it down.

Honey Bee Colonies

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are cavity nesters. Wild colonies move into hollow trees, wall voids, soffits, chimneys, water meter boxes, and empty equipment. Signs:

  • Vertical sheets of wax comb hanging parallel to each other, roughly an inch apart
  • A strong sweet, waxy smell near the entrance
  • Heavy, steady two-way traffic at a single small entrance, with returning bees often carrying visible pollen pellets on their hind legs
  • Fuzzy, golden-brown, robust-bodied bees about half an inch long
  • The colony persists year after year. Honey bees overwinter as a cluster inside the nest, so a busy colony in the same spot for multiple seasons is almost certainly bees, not wasps.

A honey bee colony in a wall can grow to tens of thousands of bees and store many pounds of honey — which is exactly why the removal approach matters so much.

One common mix-up: a swarm is not a nest. In late spring you may find a football- or basketball-sized cluster of bees hanging on a branch, fence post, or mailbox with no comb at all. That’s a swarm in transit, looking for a permanent home. Swarming bees are typically very docile because they have no nest or brood to defend, and the cluster usually moves on within a day or two. A local beekeeper will often collect it for free.

Bumble Bee Nests

Bumble bees (Bombus species) build small, messy, annual nests — usually in an existing insulated cavity rather than one they excavate:

  • Under sheds and decks, in compost piles, in abandoned rodent burrows, in loft insulation, in dense grass tussocks or bird boxes
  • The nest is an untidy clump of waxy, pot-shaped cells, not neat comb — it looks more like a cluster of small brown blobs than an organized structure
  • Colonies are small: typically a few dozen to a few hundred bees, versus thousands for yellowjackets
  • Very large, round, extremely fuzzy black-and-yellow (or orange-banded) bees with a loud low buzz
  • The colony dies out by late summer or fall and the site is not reused

Bumble bees are important pollinators and generally reluctant to sting unless the nest is disturbed directly. Several species are in serious decline, and at least one — the rusty patched bumble bee — is federally listed as endangered in the United States. If the nest isn’t in a high-traffic area, leaving it alone until it dies out naturally is usually the best choice.

Ground-Nesting Solitary Bees

In early spring, homeowners often panic about “ground bees.” Mining bees (Andrena and relatives) dig individual burrows in dry, sparse lawns and sandy soil:

  • Small volcano-like mounds of loose soil, each with a single pencil-width hole
  • Dozens or hundreds of mounds can appear close together, but each burrow belongs to one solitary female — there is no shared colony and no coordinated defense
  • The bees are small, often dark or coppery, and active for only a few weeks
  • They do not swarm, rarely sting, and disappear on their own

Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees (Xylocopa) don’t build a nest you can see. They bore perfectly round holes about half an inch across into bare, unpainted wood — deck rails, fascia boards, pergolas, fence tops — leaving coarse sawdust below and sometimes yellowish staining. The bees look like large bumble bees but with a shiny, hairless black abdomen. Males hover aggressively in front of you but cannot sting at all.

Wasp Nests: What They Look Like

Wasp nests fall into a few clearly distinguishable forms.

Paper Wasp Nests

Paper wasps (Polistes) build the nest most people picture when they hear “wasp nest”:

  • A single open, umbrella-shaped comb hanging from a short stalk, with the hexagonal cells fully exposed and facing downward
  • No outer covering or envelope
  • Gray to tan, papery, usually the size of a coffee cup up to a small saucer
  • Under eaves, porch ceilings, deck railings, door frames, grill lids, and inside unused planters
  • A modest number of wasps — often 15 to 100 — visible standing directly on the comb face

Yellowjacket Nests

Yellowjackets (Vespula species) build a paper nest surrounded by a protective envelope, and they almost always hide it:

  • Underground in old rodent burrows, or in wall voids, soffits, attics, and under siding
  • From outside, all you see is a small entrance hole with fast, darting traffic in and out
  • Colonies reach several hundred to several thousand wasps by late summer
  • Short-legged, smooth, brightly banded yellow-and-black wasps that fly directly and quickly

This is where the bee-versus-wasp mistake gets dangerous. Yellowjackets are commonly misidentified as bees — some regions even call them “meat bees” — but they aggressively defend the nest, can sting repeatedly, and will pursue an intruder. A vibrating lawn mower or a shovel near a ground nest can trigger dozens of stings.

Bald-Faced Hornet Nests

Bald-faced hornets (Dolichovespula maculata, technically a yellowjacket rather than a true hornet) build the large aerial nest people find most alarming:

  • A gray, football- to basketball-sized teardrop-shaped enclosed nest with a papery, layered surface
  • Hung from tree branches, shrubs, or building overhangs, often well above ground
  • Single entrance hole near the bottom
  • Large black-and-white wasps, highly defensive within about 10 feet of the nest

Mud Dauber and Mason Wasp Nests

Mud daubers build from soil, not paper:

  • Black and yellow mud daubers make irregular mud lumps plastered under eaves, in sheds, garages, and carports
  • Organ pipe mud daubers build neat parallel vertical mud tubes
  • Blue mud daubers often reuse abandoned mud dauber nests
  • These wasps are solitary and remarkably docile — they provision cells with paralyzed spiders and rarely sting people

Season Is a Strong Clue

Seasonality alone can settle many identifications:

  • A nest active in mid-winter in a cold climate is a honey bee colony. Wasp and hornet colonies die off after the first hard frosts, leaving only mated queens that overwinter alone in sheltered spots — not in the nest.
  • A nest that grows dramatically from July into September is almost certainly a yellowjacket or hornet colony. That late-season population spike is why wasp problems peak in late summer.
  • An empty gray papery nest found in late fall or winter is abandoned and poses no risk. Wasps do not reuse old nests.
  • A soil-mound “outbreak” in your lawn in April or May that vanishes by June is solitary mining bees.

What to Do Once You Know

The identification matters because the correct response is genuinely different.

If it’s honey bees: do not spray, and do not seal the entrance. Sealing a colony into a wall kills the bees but leaves the comb behind — the honey ferments and seeps through drywall, and the abandoned comb attracts ants, wax moths, and rodents. Instead, contact a local beekeeper or your state beekeeping association; many will perform a live removal and relocation for a modest fee, and some will collect a swarm for free. Your county extension office can point you to someone. A proper structural removal usually involves opening the cavity, extracting the comb, and sealing the void afterward so a new swarm doesn’t move in.

If it’s bumble bees: leave the nest alone if you reasonably can. The colony dies out by fall, doesn’t reuse the site, and pollinates your garden in the meantime. If it’s beside a doorway or in a child’s play area, contact a beekeeping group or extension office about relocation before considering treatment.

If it’s solitary or mining bees: no action needed. Improving turf density and watering habits discourages nesting next spring.

If it’s carpenter bees: the bees themselves aren’t the problem — the tunnels are. Fill holes in fall once activity stops, then paint or seal bare wood, since carpenter bees strongly prefer unfinished surfaces.

If it’s mud daubers: these are beneficial spider predators and almost never sting. Scrape old mud nests off with a putty knife when the wasps are inactive.

If it’s paper wasps: a small, accessible nest away from foot traffic can often be left alone. If it’s over a doorway, treat it after dark when all wasps are on the nest and temperatures have dropped, wear full protective clothing, use a product labeled for wasps from a distance, and have a clear retreat path. If it’s yellowjackets or hornets: be much more cautious. Ground nests and wall-void nests are the two situations where DIY treatment most often goes wrong, because you can’t see the colony, the nest may be larger than you think, and there’s frequently more than one exit.

When to Call a Professional

Call a licensed pest control professional if:

  • The nest is inside a wall, attic, soffit, or chimney
  • It’s a ground nest or a large late-summer yellowjacket or hornet colony
  • The nest is high up and would require a ladder — never treat a nest from a ladder
  • Anyone in the household has a known insect venom allergy, or you’ve had a severe reaction before
  • You’ve already disturbed the nest once
  • You aren’t confident in the identification

And for honey bees specifically, call a beekeeper rather than an exterminator whenever live removal is an option.

Safety note: wasp stings can cause severe allergic reactions. Seek emergency medical care immediately for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, widespread hives, or any sting inside the mouth or throat, and for anyone who has received many stings at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you have bees and wasps in the same nest? No. Each nest belongs to one species. However, yellowjackets sometimes raid weak honey bee colonies for honey and brood, so you may see both insects around a single entrance.

Do wasps make honey? No. Wasps feed larvae protein — insects, spiders, and scavenged meat — and adults sip nectar and sugars, but they don’t produce or store honey. Finding honeycomb settles the identification instantly.

Is a nest in the ground bees or wasps? Either. Many separate soil mounds each with a small, calm bee means solitary mining bees. A single hole with fast, darting, smooth-bodied wasps means yellowjackets — treat that with real caution.

Which is more dangerous? Wasps, generally. Honey bees have barbed stingers and die after stinging, so they sting once. Wasps have smooth stingers and can sting repeatedly, and yellowjackets and hornets defend their nests far more aggressively than most bees do.

If I got stung, can I tell what it was afterward? Sometimes. A stinger left embedded in the skin points to a honey bee. Wasps and bumble bees don’t leave stingers behind.
