European Wasp: Which Insect People Actually Mean, and How to Handle It

For non-aggressive wasps I've had great luck spraying nests with this Spectracide wasp remover in the evening. If you searched European wasp, you’re probably looking at a black-and-yellow insect and trying to put a name on it. The complication is that in North America the phrase points at three different insects with three very different risk profiles — and the advice for one is wrong for the others.

The short version:

  • German yellowjacket (Vespula germanica) — the insect most entomologists mean by “European wasp.” Introduced, aggressive, forms colonies of several thousand, and unusually likely to nest inside your walls. This is the one that causes real problems.
  • European paper wasp (Polistes dominula) — also introduced, also very common, but slender, docile, and nests in small open combs under eaves and inside grill handles.
  • European hornet (Vespa crabro) — large, brown-and-yellow, introduced to the eastern US in the 1800s. Impressive, mostly not aggressive away from the nest.

The name is used differently around the world, which is part of the confusion. In Australia and New Zealand, “European wasp” means Vespula germanica and nothing else. In Britain, that same species is the “German wasp,” and “common wasp” refers to its close relative Vespula vulgaris. In the United States, most people who use the term are describing whichever black-and-yellow wasp is currently in their yard.

This guide starts with the German yellowjacket, because it’s both the correct answer to the term and the one worth acting on.

German Yellowjacket: The Real “European Wasp”

Vespula germanica is native to Europe, North Africa, and temperate Asia. It was first recorded in the United States in Ohio in the mid-1970s and spread quickly. Today it’s established across the Northeast, the Great Lakes region, the Pacific Northwest, and parts of California, and it’s especially at home in cities and suburbs — which is exactly why homeowners run into it.

It belongs to the genus Vespula, so it is a true yellowjacket in every sense. How to Identify It

German yellowjackets are compact and stocky — workers run roughly 1/2 inch (12–17 mm), queens closer to 3/4 inch. They have the standard yellowjacket build: short-waisted, smooth and nearly hairless, bright yellow with sharp black banding, and wings that fold lengthwise into narrow strips at rest.

Three field marks separate them from native yellowjackets:

Three black dots on the face. Look at the flat plate on the front of the face (the clypeus). V. germanica typically shows three distinct black dots arranged in a triangle. Some individuals show a short vertical black line instead. This is the single most reliable mark if you can get a close look at a specimen — a photo, or a wasp that’s already dead. Do not try to inspect a live wasp’s face at close range.

Free-floating black spots on the abdomen. The black markings on the upper abdomen include small spots and dashes that sit separate within the yellow bands rather than connecting to the black rings.

Compared to the eastern yellowjacket. V. maculifrons, the most common native lookalike in the East, carries a bold black anchor or arrowhead shape on the first abdominal segment and lacks the three clypeal dots. Be aware that abdominal patterns are described inconsistently across sources and overlap between species — the face markings are the character worth trusting.

Honest caveat: yellowjacket markings vary between individuals, and telling Vespula species apart from six feet away is genuinely hard even for people who do it for a living. Why It Ends Up in Your Walls

In Europe, Vespula germanica usually nests underground. In North America it behaves differently: it readily nests in structural voids — wall cavities, attics, soffits, crawl spaces, hollow porch columns, and gaps behind siding. It also uses rodent burrows, hollow logs, and dense shrubs.

That habit is what makes this species disproportionately troublesome. Most yellowjackets you encounter are in the lawn, where underground nests can be marked off and avoided. Signs of a structural nest:

  • Steady two-way traffic in and out of one small gap — a weep hole, a cable penetration, a gap under flashing — for hours at a time
  • A faint rustling or crackling sound inside a wall or ceiling on warm days
  • A slowly spreading brown or damp-looking stain on interior drywall (nest moisture)
  • Individual wasps appearing indoors repeatedly, especially at windows, with no open door to explain them

The Nest Itself

German yellowjacket nests are enclosed in a grey or tan paper envelope built from chewed, weathered wood fiber. Inside are stacked horizontal combs. Because the cavity limits the shape, a nest in a wall void spreads to fill the space rather than forming the tidy sphere you’d see hanging from a branch.

Colonies are large. A mature nest commonly holds several thousand workers by late summer, and big ones exceed that. In mild-winter regions the usual annual cycle sometimes fails to reset, and a colony survives into a second year — those perennial nests are rare but can reach extraordinary sizes.

Seasonal Pattern

Like nearly all social wasps in temperate North America, the colony is annual:

  • Spring: a single overwintered queen emerges, picks a cavity, and builds a starter nest of a few dozen cells alone.
  • Early summer: the first workers take over foraging and construction. The nest is still small and the colony is comparatively easy to deal with.
  • Late summer: peak population and peak defensiveness. Most stings happen now.
  • Fall: the colony produces new queens and males, then collapses at hard frost. Only mated queens survive, overwintering in leaf litter, bark crevices, or sheltered structures.
  • Winter: the old nest is dead and will not be reused next year.

Behavior and Sting Risk

Two behaviors drive most incidents.

Scavenging. German yellowjackets are among the most persistent scavengers in the genus. Early in the season they hunt live insects for protein; from midsummer on they shift heavily toward sugar and will work a picnic table, a garbage can, a fallen apple, or an open soda can with real determination. Stings to the mouth and throat from drinking out of an unattended can are an actual emergency-room presentation, not a scare story. Pour drinks into a clear glass outdoors, and cover them.

Nest defense. This species defends aggressively and responds to vibration as much as to visible movement. European Paper Wasp: The Common Mix-Up

Polistes dominula arrived in North America around 1980 and is now widespread. Plenty of people call it a “European wasp,” and it does have crisp yellow-and-black coloring that reads as yellowjacket-ish at a glance.

It isn’t one. Tell them apart by:

  • Shape. Paper wasps are long and slender with a pronounced narrow waist. Yellowjackets are short and stocky.
  • Legs in flight. Polistes dangles its long hind legs conspicuously below the body while flying. Yellowjackets tuck theirs in.
  • Antennae. European paper wasp antennae are orange on the underside — a distinctive mark once you know to look.
  • Nest. An open, umbrella-shaped comb with no paper envelope, hung from a short stalk. You can see the hexagonal cells and the larvae from below.
  • Colony size. Dozens of wasps, not thousands.

Behaviorally they’re much calmer. A European paper wasp colony under an eave will usually tolerate people walking past. They only become defensive when the nest itself is contacted — which is why so many stings come from grabbing a grill handle, a mailbox, a patio umbrella, or a piece of unused playground equipment with a nest tucked inside.

European Hornet: The Big One

Vespa crabro was introduced to the eastern United States in the 1800s and is established from New England south to Georgia and west to the Dakotas. It’s the only true hornet native to Europe and the only Vespa species established in North America.

It’s unmistakable once you’ve seen it: workers run about an inch long and queens reach roughly 1.4 inches, with a reddish-brown thorax and a yellow abdomen marked in brown — noticeably browner and larger than a yellowjacket. It nests in hollow trees, wall voids, and attics, and unlike most wasps it forages at night and is drawn to porch lights and lit windows.

Despite the size, European hornets are relatively reluctant to sting away from the nest. The sting is painful but not medically different from other wasp stings for a non-allergic person. They do sometimes strip bark from lilac, birch, and shrubs to gather nest fiber, which can girdle young branches.

What Homeowners Should Actually Do

If it’s a European paper wasp nest somewhere you don’t touch — a high eave, a shed rafter — leaving it alone through the season is a legitimate choice. The colony dies at frost, the nest won’t be reused, and the wasps spend the summer removing caterpillars from your garden. Knock down the empty comb in winter if you don’t want a repeat.

If it’s a small, early-season nest in a spot you can’t avoid — a doorframe, a grill, a play structure — spring and early summer is the safe window, when the colony is a queen and a handful of workers. Work at dusk when foragers are home and cool, wear covered clothing, keep a clear retreat path, and don’t do it from a ladder.

If it’s a German yellowjacket nest in a wall, attic, or crawl space, call a professional. This is the firmest recommendation in this guide, for reasons that are specific rather than generic:

  • You cannot see the nest, so you cannot judge its size or where it extends.
  • Sealing the entry hole is one of the worst things you can do. Trapped workers chew toward light and air, and light and air are on the inside — meaning hundreds of wasps in your living space.
  • Consumer aerosols reach a few feet and knock down the wasps you can see. Nothing reaches the brood in a cavity, and the survivors will be extremely defensive.
  • A colony this size means a genuinely dangerous number of simultaneous stings if it’s provoked in an enclosed space.

Professionals treat structural nests by applying insecticidal dust into the void so returning foragers carry it to the brood, then sealing only after the colony is confirmed dead — and they often remove the nest material afterward, since abandoned combs attract carpet beetles and other secondary pests. Anyone with a known venom allergy should not attempt any wasp nest removal. Multiple stings can trigger a severe reaction even in people without a prior allergy history, and a hidden colony is exactly the scenario that delivers multiple stings.

Reducing German Yellowjacket Pressure

Because this species scavenges, sanitation does more than it would for most wasps:

  • Use tight-fitting lids on outdoor trash and recycling, and rinse cans and bottles before they go in
  • Clear fallen fruit from under trees promptly
  • Cover food and drinks at outdoor meals; use lidded cups for children
  • Clean grills and the ground around them after cooking
  • Skip hummingbird feeders that drip, or fit ones with bee guards

And because it nests in cavities, exclusion matters. In late winter and early spring — before queens are searching for nest sites — walk the exterior and seal what you find: gaps around utility penetrations, torn or missing soffit vent screens, loose siding and trim, unscreened attic and gable vents, and cracks in the foundation. “European wasp” is a term that spans three insects, and the differences matter. If it’s slender, dangles its legs, and lives under a small open comb, it’s a European paper wasp and it’s mostly harmless. If it’s huge, brown, and bumping your porch light after dark, it’s a European hornet and it’s mostly harmless too.
