Short answer: for most homeowners the right product is a jet-stream “wasp and hornet” aerosol containing pyrethroids, used after dark from 15 to 20 feet away, with a clear escape route planned before you press the button. It costs $8 to $15, reaches an exposed nest from a safe distance, and knocks wasps down in seconds. Foam is the better choice for a ground nest or a hole in the siding.
For non-aggressive wasps I've had great luck spraying nests with this Spectracide wasp remover in the evening. For a nest up high in an eave, soffit, or tree, this Gotcha pole adapter clamps onto the can so you can spray from the end of an extension pole and treat the nest from 10+ feet away instead of standing right under it. And for anything aggressive I wear this ridiculous-looking upper torso beekeeping suit and keep my distance. It seems silly, but trust me, I learned the hard way.
That’s the whole decision for maybe 80% of situations. Almost every consumer wasp spray on the shelf works the same way: a fast-acting insecticide dissolved in a solvent and pushed out under pressure.
The insecticides are pyrethrins or pyrethroids. Pyrethrins are natural compounds extracted from chrysanthemum flowers. Pyrethroids are synthetic molecules built to imitate them — permethrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, tetramethrin, prallethrin, phenothrin and similar names ending in -thrin. Both attack the same target: sodium channels in insect nerve cells. Normally those channels open briefly to fire a nerve signal and then snap shut. Pyrethroids jam them open, so the nerve fires continuously. The wasp loses coordination within seconds, drops, and dies.
Two details matter practically:
Knockdown is not the same as death. A wasp that drops immediately may still be alive for several minutes and can still sting reflexively. Never pick up a downed wasp with bare hands, and don’t let children or pets near them.
It has to make contact — or be walked through. The spray kills wasps it wets directly, and it also leaves a residue on the nest surface that kills foragers landing there over the following hours and days. That residual effect is what finishes off the wasps that were away from the nest when you treated it. In direct sunlight the residue breaks down within a day or two; in a sheltered spot like a soffit or the underside of an eave, it can remain active considerably longer.
The propellant and solvent matter too. The “jet” or “stream” design that lets a can reach 20 feet is a function of the propellant pressure and nozzle, not the insecticide. That’s why two cans with identical active ingredients can perform very differently at distance.
The pest control aisle looks crowded, but nearly everything on it falls into one of four categories.

This is the default product and the one most people mean by “wasp and hornet spray.” The can produces a narrow, coherent stream you can aim at a nest from across the yard. Point-and-shoot simplicity, good residual activity, widely available, cheap.
The weakness is penetration. A stream aimed at a hole delivers most of its volume onto the surface around the hole. For anything enclosed, foam is better.
Foam leaves the can as a liquid and expands into a dense lather. Sprayed into a ground nest entrance or a gap in siding, it swells to fill the cavity, coats the wasps inside, and physically blocks the exit while the insecticide works. It also stays put on vertical surfaces instead of running off.
The trade-off is range. Foaming products typically project only a few feet, which means standing much closer to the nest than a jet spray requires. For a ground nest treated at night that is usually acceptable. For a hornet nest ten feet up, it is not.
Products with “freeze” in the name are a mixed bag, and the name is misleading more often than not. Some are genuinely cryogenic — they use a refrigerant propellant that chills the wasp into immobility with no insecticide at all. Most are conventional pyrethrin aerosols named for how fast they drop a wasp, not for any cooling effect.
Either way, the shared characteristic is speed with minimal lingering residue, which makes them the sensible pick for a wasp inside the house, a nest above a food-prep or play area, or anywhere you don’t want a persistent chemical film. For a full outdoor colony, the lack of residual activity is a real drawback: foragers that were out at the time come home to an untreated nest.
These do not kill. They apply a residue — sometimes a pyrethroid, sometimes a plant-oil blend of peppermint, clove, and lemongrass — meant to make a surface unattractive for nest building. Applied to clean eaves, soffits, and porch ceilings in early spring before queens start scouting, they can genuinely reduce how many nests you get. Applied to an active nest, they accomplish nothing except annoying the colony.

Nearly every product is labeled for wasps and hornets, which sometimes makes people wonder whether they need a different can for each.
They don’t. Hornets are wasps — a subset of the same family. Bald-faced hornets, despite the name, are technically yellowjackets. Anything labeled for wasps and hornets is formulated for the whole group, including yellowjackets, paper wasps, and mud daubers. Species matters for tactics, not for product choice. A paper wasp nest with fifteen residents and a mature yellowjacket colony with two thousand call for very different approaches, but the same can of spray.
There’s no single best wasp spray — there’s a best spray for the nest you’re looking at. Four criteria decide it.

Cans are marketed on reach, and label claims of 20 to 27 feet are common. Treat those as best-case numbers. They’re measured with a full, room-temperature can held at the optimal angle in still air. A half-empty can that’s been in a cold garage, sprayed into a light breeze, will fall well short.
Plan for a working distance of 15 to 20 feet from a can that claims 20-plus, and buy on the higher end of the claimed range if the nest is high up. If you can’t reach the nest from a position where you can also walk away quickly, the spray isn’t the limiting factor — the situation is, and it’s a job for a professional.
Turn the can around. The active ingredient panel tells you more than the front label does.
The best consumer formulations pair a fast knockdown pyrethroid with a residual one. If you see two -thrin names plus PBO on the panel, that’s a well-designed product.
A note on older chemistry: some guides still mention organophosphates like malathion and diazinon. Diazinon was withdrawn from US residential use in 2004, and organophosphates have essentially disappeared from consumer wasp aerosols. If you have an ancient can in the garage listing one of these, dispose of it through your local household hazardous waste program rather than using it.
Electrically rated (dielectric) sprays. Standard wasp spray is water- and solvent-based and conducts electricity. Wasps nest in meter boxes, service panels, and utility cabinets with some regularity, and spraying a conventional product into energized equipment is genuinely dangerous. Dielectric-tested wasp sprays are formulated to be non-conductive — products used by utility crews are commonly tested to around 47,000 volts. If the nest is in or on anything electrical, this is the one specification that matters more than anything else on the label. When in doubt, shut off power at the breaker or call an electrician.
Can size. A standard 14 to 20 ounce can is enough for one small-to-medium exposed nest. A large yellowjacket colony can consume most of a can, and running dry halfway through treatment is the worst possible outcome. Buy two.
Wasp spray is stocked seasonally almost everywhere: home improvement and hardware stores, garden centers, farm supply stores, and — from late spring through early autumn — most supermarkets and drugstores. Expect $8 to $15 for a standard consumer can, a few dollars more for foaming or dielectric-rated products.
Shelves empty fast during a hot August, so if you already know you have a nest, buy the can before the day you plan to use it. Cans also lose pressure over years of storage; a spray bought three summers ago will not throw a stream as far as its label promises.
After dark, or in the hour before dawn. This single decision does more for your safety than any product choice.
Foragers return to the nest at nightfall, so treating at night hits the entire colony at once instead of leaving a dozen survivors in the field. Cool temperatures make wasps sluggish and slow to respond. Wasps also see poorly in low light — which is exactly why you should use a red-filtered light or a flashlight set on the ground pointing at the nest, rather than a white headlamp that turns your face into the target.
Avoid treating in the middle of a hot day, in wind above about 10 mph, or when rain is expected within a few hours. Dress for it. Long sleeves, long pants tucked into socks, closed shoes, gloves, and eye protection. A hooded sweatshirt with the hood up protects the neck and scalp — the worst places to be stung. Light colors are better than dark. Skip perfume, scented deodorant, and hair products.
Plan the exit first. Identify exactly where you’re walking afterward and clear the path of hoses, chairs, planters, and steps. Most serious multi-sting incidents involve someone tripping or freezing, not someone being outrun. Have a second route in mind.
Check who else is around. Nobody outside, pets indoors, windows near the nest closed, children’s toys and pet bowls moved or covered.
Test the can. One short burst at the ground confirms it’s pressurized and shows you the actual stream pattern and reach before you’re relying on it.
Aerial nests (paper wasp combs, hornet footballs): treat the entrance, then coat the exterior and the attachment point. Anything that lands there afterward picks up residue.
Ground nests: foam into the entrance hole at night, generously — a large yellowjacket colony extends well beyond the visible opening. Some people plug the hole afterward with soil; it’s optional and imperfect, since wasps can excavate a new exit, and it prevents you from monitoring the entrance for activity. Wall voids, soffits, and attics: this is the situation to think twice about. Foam injected into a cavity works, but a partially treated wall colony will often find another way out — frequently into the living space. Drilling access holes makes that considerably more likely. Never seal the outside entrance of a wall nest without treating it first, or the colony will chew inward. For anything inside a structure, professional treatment is the right call.
Seconds: wasps hit directly drop almost immediately. Expect visible chaos at the nest for a minute or two.
Minutes: wasps that were airborne or elsewhere on the property become noticeably more aggressive. A disturbed colony releases an alarm pheromone that recruits nestmates to the threat, and a treated nest keeps signaling for a while after you leave. This is precisely why “spray and walk away” isn’t a suggestion.
Hours to overnight: returning foragers land on treated surfaces and pick up a lethal dose. This is where the residual activity earns its place.
24 to 72 hours: a successfully treated nest should show no activity. Some traffic on day one is normal — those are foragers that were away during treatment.
After a week: if wasps are still active, the treatment missed. Concealed nests, very large colonies, and secondary entrances are the usual reasons. Exposed nests treated correctly succeed the large majority of the time; hidden ones frequently need a second application or professional equipment.

Pyrethrins and pyrethroids have low acute toxicity to mammals — we metabolize them quickly, and insects don’t. The realistic hazards from a can of wasp spray are irritation and exposure to the solvents and propellants rather than poisoning:
Never treat an indoor nest in an enclosed room without ventilation, and never use an outdoor-labeled product indoors.
For people and pets, the meaningful risk window is short. Once the spray has dried — a few hours outdoors — the surface is not hazardous under normal contact. Indoors, ventilate the area and wipe down any treated surface people or pets touch, then keep everyone out until it’s dry.
The residue stays lethal to insects far longer than it’s a concern for you: days in sunlight, potentially weeks in a protected spot. That’s the intended behavior, not a problem.
Keep pets indoors during treatment and until residues dry. Cats are worth singling out — they’re substantially more sensitive to permethrin than dogs or people because they metabolize it slowly, and permethrin exposure in cats can be serious. Don’t apply permethrin-based products where a cat walks or grooms.
This comes up constantly, and the answer is more nuanced than yes or no.
Bees: yes, and this matters. Pyrethroids are highly toxic to honey bees and native bees. A wasp spray will kill any bee it contacts and any bee that lands on a treated surface. This is the single most important reason to identify what you’re looking at before you spray. Honey bee swarms and colonies can usually be removed alive by a local beekeeper, often at no charge, and bumble bee nests die off naturally in autumn and rarely need treating at all. If you must treat a nest near a garden, spray at night when pollinators aren’t flying, and target the nest only — never spray flowering plants.
Spiders: usually, but it’s not the right tool. Spiders are arachnids, not insects, and their nervous systems respond to pyrethroids too — a spider hit with a direct, soaking spray will generally die. But their long legs keep the body off treated surfaces, so they pick up much less residue than a walking insect, and many wasp sprays don’t list spiders on the label at all. If spiders are your actual problem, a product labeled for them will work better.
Other insects: most flying and crawling insects are susceptible, including beneficial ones — ladybugs, lacewings, butterflies, and predatory wasps that control garden pests. Wasp spray is a broad-spectrum insecticide, not a targeted one. Treat the nest, not the yard.
Short bursts instead of a sustained stream. The most frequent error. A two-second squirt agitates a colony without delivering a killing dose. Commit to 10 to 15 continuous seconds or don’t start.
Spraying in daylight. Half the colony is out foraging, the ones at home are alert and warm, and you’ve announced yourself to every wasp on the property.
Standing too close, or standing on a ladder. Ladder work over a wasp nest is how people fall. If you can’t treat it from the ground, it isn’t a DIY job.
Treating only the visible nest. Large yellowjacket and hornet colonies often have more than one entrance. Watch the traffic pattern in daylight the day before to find them all.
Going back to admire the results. The five minutes after treatment are the most dangerous of the whole operation.
Sealing a wall entrance before treatment. Blocked wasps chew in the other direction — into your house.
Using the wrong product on an electrical box. Water-based spray plus energized equipment is a serious hazard.
Wasp spray is the right tool for a specific job: a small-to-medium nest you can see, reach from the ground at a safe distance, and walk away from. Outside that, the risk-to-benefit calculation changes fast.
