Short answer: most black-and-yellow insects in your yard are not wasps. Hoverflies, wasp moths, mantidflies, sawflies, robber flies, and a handful of beetles all wear wasp colors without owning a stinger. The four checks that settle it in seconds are wing count, antenna shape, waist shape, and how the insect flies.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. Wasp mimics are among the most useful insects in a garden — aphid predators, pollinators, and parasitoids of pests you actually want gone. Spraying them because they looked like trouble is a genuine loss, and it happens constantly. Yellow-and-black banding is one of the most recognized warning signals in nature. Birds, lizards, and mammals learn quickly that stripey, buzzing insects hurt, and they generalize that lesson to anything similar. Harmless species that happen to resemble a stinging model get eaten less often, so over generations the resemblance sharpens. Biologists call this Batesian mimicry — a defenseless species advertising a threat it can’t back up.
The practical consequence for homeowners: evolution has produced insects specifically optimized to fool a quick glance. Some hoverflies even wave their front legs in front of their heads to imitate the long antennae they don’t have. You are not being careless when you mistake one for a wasp. You just need better checks than color.
Before the species list, learn the four features that do almost all the work. You can run these from three or four feet away, or from a zoomed-in phone photo.
1. Count the wings. True wasps have four wings — two pairs, with the smaller hind pair often hooked to the forewing so they beat as one. Flies have two, and the hind pair is reduced to tiny knobs called halteres that stick out behind the wing bases. If you can see only two wings, you’re looking at a fly, and it cannot sting you.
2. Look at the antennae. Wasp antennae are long, dark, and usually bent at an elbow partway along. Fly antennae are short, stubby, and easy to miss entirely. Moth antennae are feathery or thread-like and often held out in a V.
3. Check the waist. Wasps in the group most people mean — paper wasps, yellowjackets, hornets, mud daubers — have a distinctly pinched waist between thorax and abdomen. 4. Watch the flight and the food. Hoverflies hold a dead-still hover in mid-air, then dart sideways and hover again, and they visit flowers almost exclusively. Real wasps fly with more direction and purpose, and they show up where protein and sugar are: the grill, the trash can, soda cans, fallen fruit, and wooden fence rails they chew for nest pulp.
Two more that help: wasps fold their wings back along the body at rest, while many flies hold theirs out at an angle. And moths have a coiled tube for a mouth rather than the chewing jaws wasps use for building and butchering.
Family Syrphidae — the mimic you will see most often.
Hoverflies are the single most common answer to “what was that wasp on my flowers?” There are thousands of species, and many are convincing yellowjacket copies: black bodies with crisp yellow bands, roughly wasp-sized, and often found in exactly the same flower beds.
How to tell: two wings, huge eyes that cover most of the head, and short antennae. The hover itself is diagnostic — a wasp doesn’t park motionless in mid-air for seconds at a time. Hoverflies also lack the pinched waist, though the banding can create the illusion of one.
Two you’ll probably meet: the yellowjacket hoverfly (Milesia virginiensis), sometimes called the “good news bee,” which hovers directly in front of people’s faces and unnerves everyone involved despite being completely harmless; and the drone fly (Eristalis tenax), a stouter honey-bee-like species common on late-summer flowers.
Why you want them: the larvae of many hoverfly species are voracious aphid predators, working through hundreds of aphids each before pupating. Adults are meaningful pollinators. A yard with lots of hoverflies is a yard with working pest control.
Families Erebidae and Sesiidae — day-flying moths that read as wasps.
Most moths fly at night and look nothing like wasps. These are the exceptions, and they’re good at it.
The polka-dot wasp moth (Syntomeida epilais) is a Florida and Gulf Coast standout: iridescent blue-black wings and body dotted with white, with a bright red-orange tip to the abdomen. It flies by day, visits flowers, and cannot sting. Its caterpillar is the oleander caterpillar — orange with black hair tufts — which can strip an oleander shrub of leaves. So the moth is worth recognizing, just not as a stinging threat. Related mimics include the yellow-collared scape moth (Cisseps fulvicollis) and the Virginia ctenucha (Ctenucha virginica).
Clearwing moths (Sesiidae) go further, shedding most of their wing scales so the wings look transparent like a wasp’s, with narrow banded bodies to match. The squash vine borer (Melittia cucurbitae) is the one gardeners meet: an orange-and-black day-flying moth that looks unmistakably wasp-like as it buzzes around squash and pumpkin vines, where its larvae tunnel into stems.
How to tell: wings covered in loose scales rather than bare membrane, giving a matte, powdery finish that smudges if touched; a coiled drinking proboscis instead of chewing jaws; and feathery or brush-like antennae. No stinger, ever.
Family Mantispidae — the strangest mimic on the list.
Climaciella brunnea is a mantidfly that mimics Polistes paper wasps closely enough to fool experienced naturalists: same reddish-brown and yellow pattern, same size, same four clear wings. Then you notice the front legs, which are folded and spined exactly like a praying mantis’s, because mantidflies catch prey the same way.
How to tell: raptorial (grabbing) forelegs held up under the head, an elongated neck-like front thorax, and no pinched wasp waist. Mantidflies are unrelated to mantises and unrelated to wasps — they’re lacewing relatives.
What they do: larvae hitch rides on spiders and feed inside spider egg sacs. Adults are predators of small insects. Neither stage can sting a person.
Suborder Symphyta — actual relatives of wasps, without the sting.
Sawflies belong to Hymenoptera, the same order as wasps, bees, and ants. They just branched off before the wasp waist evolved. Many are black and yellow and wasp-sized, and a few narrow-bodied stem sawflies look startlingly wasp-like in flight.
How to tell: no waist. The abdomen joins the thorax across its full width, giving a solid, cylindrical look. Females have a saw-like ovipositor for cutting slits into plant tissue to lay eggs — hence the name — and it is not a stinger. Sawfly larvae look like caterpillars but carry more than five pairs of fleshy prolegs, which is how you separate them from moth caterpillars.
Where they matter: larvae of pear, rose, and pine sawflies chew foliage and can be a garden nuisance. The adults are harmless to people.
Family Asilidae — aerial predators, some in wasp costume.
Robber flies are ambush hunters that take other insects in mid-air, including real wasps. Species in genera such as Laphria and Mallophora are furry and boldly banded, mimicking bumble bees and large wasps.
How to tell: two wings, enormous eyes with a dip between them, and a dense tuft of bristles across the face called a mystax. They perch on twig tips and fence wire, launch at passing insects, and return to the same perch.
One honest caveat: robber flies have a stout piercing proboscis and will jab defensively if you pick one up. It’s a bite, not a sting, and it’s avoidable — don’t handle them.
Family Conopidae — the fly that copied the waist.
Conopids are the mimics that pass the waist test. Their abdomens narrow into a genuine slender stalk before widening again, and they’re often banded black and amber, so a quick look reads “small wasp.”
How to tell: back to the wing count — two wings, plus short antennae and a broad, blunt head. Adult conopids visit flowers; the larvae develop inside living bees and wasps, making them parasitoids of the very insects they resemble.
Family Cerambycidae, among others.
The locust borer (Megacyllene robiniae) is a longhorn beetle marked with bright yellow zigzag bands on black. It appears in numbers on goldenrod in late summer and early fall, exactly when wasp anxiety peaks, and its jerky movement adds to the impression. Europe’s wasp beetle (Clytus arietis) does the same job overseas.
How to tell: hardened wing covers (elytra) that meet in a straight line down the back — no folded membranous wings visible at rest — plus long antennae swept back over the body and obvious chewing mandibles. Beetles have no stinger. Locust borer larvae do tunnel into black locust trees, so they’re a tree-health question rather than a sting question.
Not every mimic is pretending. Some bees are simply sleek and hairless enough to read as wasps.
Cuckoo bees (Nomada species) are reddish, nearly hairless, and wasp-like in outline because they don’t collect pollen — they lay eggs in other bees’ nests instead. Masked bees (Hylaeus) are small, slender, black bees with pale yellow face markings that look like miniature wasps.
How to tell: bees carry branched, feather-like body hairs and generally broader hind legs, and their behavior stays flower-focused. If it’s working blossoms methodically and ignoring your lunch, lean bee. For the full comparison, see wasp vs bee and the difference between bees and wasps.
The mimicry runs both directions, and this is where people get caught out.
Scoliid wasps — including the blue-winged wasp, Scolia dubia, with its two yellow abdominal spots — are hairy, bumbling flower visitors that most people call bees. They’re real wasps, capable of stinging, but they’re docile grub-hunters that rarely bother anyone; see our scoliid wasp guide.
Velvet ants (family Mutillidae) are the important exception on this whole page. They look like large, brightly furred ants walking on the ground, not like wasps at all — but the wingless females are wasps, and their sting is genuinely severe. Details in our velvet ant guide.
This is one of the most common descriptions homeowners give, and it usually resolves to one of four things:
If it’s alone, not defending anything, and not showing interest in you, it’s almost certainly in the harmless-or-nearly-so category regardless of which one it is.
The safe default is simple: treat an unknown insect as if it can sting, but don’t attack it.
Color is the least reliable identification feature you have, because it’s the feature mimics copy best. Wings, antennae, waist, and behavior are what actually separate a stinging wasp from a hoverfly, a moth, or a beetle wearing the same warning stripes.
Getting this right is worth the ten seconds. Most of the wasp look-alikes in a typical yard are actively working for you — eating aphids, pollinating, or parasitizing pests — and the real wasps are usually solitary species that have no interest in defending anything. Learning the difference means you spray far less and lose nothing.
