Not all wasp stings are equal. A cicada killer sting is a bad pinprick. A paper wasp sting feels like acid on a paper cut. A tarantula hawk sting is, by the account of the entomologist who has been stung by more insects than almost anyone alive, briefly incapacitating.

There is an actual scale for this. Where the Wasp Sting Pain Scale Comes From

The numbers above come from the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, developed by the late entomologist Dr. Justin O. Schmidt. Over a career spent studying stinging insects, Schmidt was stung — often deliberately, often accidentally — by roughly 150 species, and rated each on a 0-to-4 scale:

  • 0 — the sting cannot penetrate human skin, or produces no meaningful sensation
  • 1 — minor and brief; a small, sharp annoyance
  • 2 — the familiar honey bee benchmark; genuinely painful but manageable
  • 3 — severe; hard to think about anything else while it lasts
  • 4 — incapacitating; pain that overrides normal function

Schmidt paired each rating with a short description, and those descriptions are why the index is famous. A yellow jacket is “hot and smoky, almost irreverent. Imagine W. C. Fields extinguishing a cigar on your tongue.” A paper wasp is “caustic and burning, with a distinctly bitter aftertaste. Like spilling a beaker of hydrochloric acid on a paper cut.” A tarantula hawk is “blinding, fierce, shockingly electric. A running hair dryer has just been dropped into your bubble bath.”

Two important caveats before you take any of it as gospel:

  1. It is one person’s subjective experience. Schmidt was consistent and methodical, but the scale measures how stings felt to him, not a physical quantity. A parallel scale published by entomologist Christopher Starr in 1985 uses a similar 1–4 structure and reaches broadly similar conclusions, which is reassuring, but neither is a laboratory measurement.
  2. It rates pain, not danger. This is the part most people get backwards, and it matters enough that the rest of this guide keeps coming back to it.

Level 4: The Most Painful Wasp Stings

Only a handful of insects worldwide have earned a 4.0. Three of them are wasps, and none of them is a realistic threat to a North American homeowner.

Tarantula hawk (Pepsis and Hemipepsis species) is the famous one, and the only level-4 wasp that actually lives in the United States — commonly in the Southwest, where these two-inch, blue-black wasps with orange wings hunt tarantulas. The saving grace is duration: Schmidt clocked the unbearable phase at about five minutes, after which it fades fast and leaves remarkably little damage. Tarantula hawks are also famously placid. They are solitary, have no colony to defend, and stings almost always come from someone handling or stepping on one. Warrior wasp (Synoeca septentrionalis) is a Central and South American social species that drums its wings against the nest in unison as a warning before attacking. Schmidt’s description — “torture; you are chained in the flow of an active volcano” — comes with a duration of roughly two hours, which makes it arguably worse than the tarantula hawk in practice. Executioner wasp (Polistes carnifex) is a large tropical paper wasp from Central and South America, widely rated at 4.0 and popularized by a viral self-sting video. For scale, the insect usually placed at the very top — the bullet ant (Paraponera clavata) at 4.0+ — is an ant, not a wasp, and its pain runs 12 hours or more.

Level 3: Severe, and Actually Present in Your Yard

This is where the scale stops being trivia.

Paper wasps (Polistes species) sit at 3.0. These are the wasps building the open, downward-facing honeycomb nests under your eaves, deck rails, and grill lids. A single sting is genuinely severe — sharp, burning, and lingering — and paper wasps are common across the entire United States. Velvet ants (Dasymutilla klugii), despite the name, are wingless female wasps, and Schmidt rated them 3.0: “explosive and long lasting, you sound insane as you scream.” They wander across lawns and bare ground in the southern half of the country. The good news is that they are solitary, slow, and conspicuous — most stings come from picking one up. Level 2: The Stings You Are Most Likely to Get

Yellow jackets (Vespula species) and bald-faced hornets (Dolichovespula maculata) both rate 2.0 — the same as a honey bee. That number badly understates their importance, because pain per sting is the wrong metric for a colonial wasp.

A yellow jacket colony can hold thousands of workers by late summer. Disturb the nest and you do not get one 2.0 sting; you get a coordinated defensive response, wasps that pursue you for a considerable distance, and each of them capable of stinging repeatedly. Yellow jackets cause the large majority of wasp stings in the United States, and multiple-sting incidents are overwhelmingly a yellow jacket or hornet problem. The Asian giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia), the “murder hornet” of 2020 headlines, was never formally placed on Schmidt’s index, though its sting is universally described as extreme; Japanese entomologist Masato Ono famously likened it to a hot nail driven through his leg. For US homeowners the practical answer is simple: the species was declared eradicated from the United States in December 2024, and every “giant hornet” a homeowner reports is essentially always a native cicada killer, European hornet, or horntail. Level 1 and Below: The Big Scary Wasps That Barely Hurt

The largest wasps most Americans ever see are also among the mildest.

Cicada killers (Sphecius species) reach two inches long and hover menacingly over lawns in midsummer, which reliably terrifies people. Schmidt rated their sting around 1.5. Males, which do the aggressive-looking patrolling and dive-bombing, have no stinger at all and are physically incapable of stinging. Females sting only when handled or trapped against skin. Mud daubers (Sceliphron, Chalybion, Trypoxylon) sit near the bottom of the scale, around 1.0. They are solitary, do not defend their mud tube nests, and stings are rare enough that most people who have lived alongside them for years have never been stung. See the mud dauber guide.

The pattern is consistent and worth internalizing: large solitary wasp = intimidating and harmless; small social wasp = unremarkable and genuinely risky.

Pain Rating Is Not a Danger Rating

Schmidt himself was emphatic on this point, and it is the single most useful takeaway here.

Sting pain is produced mostly by venom components designed to cause immediate, memorable pain — an evolutionary deterrent. Medical danger comes from something almost entirely separate: an allergic reaction to the venom, or a large enough total venom dose from many stings at once.

That is why the ranking of dangerous wasps for American homeowners looks nothing like the pain ranking:

  1. Yellow jackets — most stings, most multiple-sting incidents, most sting-related emergency visits, and a habit of nesting underground and in wall voids where they are found by lawnmowers and renovation work
  2. Bald-faced hornets — highly defensive, aerial nests often placed at head height in shrubs and on structures
  3. Paper wasps — very common in high-contact spots (door frames, mailboxes, patio furniture), painful sting, but far smaller colonies and a much shorter fuse to disengage
  4. Everything else — mostly a non-issue

Stings from all bees, wasps, and hornets combined kill roughly 70 people a year in the United States, and the large majority of those deaths are anaphylaxis in people who often had no known venom allergy beforehand. A person allergic to wasp venom is in more danger from a single 2.0 yellow jacket sting than a non-allergic person is from a 4.0 tarantula hawk. What Actually Changes How Much a Sting Hurts

Two people stung by the same species will not report the same experience. The variables that matter most:

  • Sting location. Nerve-dense, thin-skinned areas — fingertips, lips, nostrils, eyelids, the webbing between fingers — hurt disproportionately. Schmidt’s colleague Michael Smith mapped this systematically with honey bees and found roughly a threefold difference between the least and most painful body sites.
  • Number of stings. A single sting from a colonial wasp is a minor event. Fifteen is a medical one, even without an allergy.
  • Venom dose delivered. Wasps meter their venom. A defensive jab from a startled wasp may deliver very little; a sustained sting from a nest defender delivers much more. This is also why wasps, unlike honey bees, can sting repeatedly — their stingers are smooth rather than barbed.
  • Your own immune response. Most of what you feel after the first few minutes is your body’s histamine reaction, not the venom itself. That varies enormously between individuals, which is why a normal sting reaction covers such a wide range.

What to Do When You Get Stung

Regardless of where the species falls on the scale, the first-aid protocol is the same:

  1. Get away from the area first. Wasp venom contains alarm pheromones that recruit nestmates. Move indoors or well away before doing anything else.
  2. Wash the site with soap and water.
  3. Apply a cold pack for 10–20 minutes at a time to blunt pain and swelling.
  4. Take an oral antihistamine and, if needed, an over-the-counter pain reliever.
  5. Watch for systemic symptoms for at least 30 minutes — anything happening away from the sting site is a 911 call, not a wait-and-see.
