And for anything aggressive I wear this ridiculous-looking upper torso beekeeping suit and keep my distance. It seems silly, but trust me, I learned the hard way.
Most people meet a yellow jacket nest by accident. You run the mower over one corner of the lawn, pull a weed near the foundation, or lean a ladder against the siding — and suddenly there are far more wasps in the air than the situation seems to justify.
That ambush quality is the defining feature of a yellow jacket nest. Unlike a paper wasp nest hanging in plain sight under an eave, a yellow jacket nest is almost always enclosed and hidden: in the ground, inside a wall void, under a shed floor, or tucked into dense shrubbery. You rarely see the nest itself. What you see is a stream of wasps disappearing into a hole.

Yellow jackets are papermakers. Workers scrape weathered wood — fence boards, deck rails, dead branches — chew the fiber into pulp with saliva, and spread it into thin sheets. The result is a genuine paper nest, gray to light tan, built as horizontal combs stacked one above another and wrapped in a multi-layered paper envelope.
That envelope is the key structural difference from a paper wasp nest. A paper wasp builds a single open comb on a stalk, cells facing down, with nothing covering them. A yellow jacket wraps the whole structure in insulating paper, which is why the colony can grow into the thousands while staying invisible.
The other constant is that the nest is built inside a cavity, not out in the open. Yellow jackets in the genus Vespula — the species behind almost all backyard problems — need a void to build in. That void is usually an abandoned rodent burrow, but it can be a wall, an attic corner, a crawl space, a compost heap, the hollow under a porch step, or the inside of a stacked woodpile. Because the nest is hidden, identification usually means reading the entrance rather than the nest.

An aerial nest looks like: a gray, fully enclosed paper ball or teardrop hanging in a tree, shrub, or under an eave. In North America this almost always means a bald faced hornet, which despite the name is an aerial-nesting yellow jacket. A few Vespula colonies also build partly exposed nests in shrubs or attics, but this is the exception.
One detail resolves a great many identification questions: a fan or mound of excavated soil at the entrance means it is probably not a yellow jacket. Cicada killer wasps and other solitary digger wasps push out a distinctive spray of loose earth, and they are harmless loners rather than a colony. Yellow jackets typically occupy an existing cavity and leave a plain, worn hole.

The bee distinction matters most, because the response is completely different. Bumble bees nesting in the ground and honey bees in a wall are valuable pollinators, they are far less defensive, and honey bee colonies in structures should be handled by a beekeeper or a specialist rather than sprayed. Fuzzy body, rounded shape, and slow lumbering flight point to a bee. A smooth, bright, sharply banded body and quick darting flight point to a yellow jacket. If wasps are clearly working your yard but you cannot find the source, do not go hunting blindly. Use flight lines instead.

A yellow jacket nest is an annual project that starts microscopic and ends enormous. Understanding where you are in that cycle tells you how urgent the problem is.

That last row is the single most useful fact for a homeowner: a yellow jacket colony dies every winter, and the nest is not reused the following year. A nest you discover in October has weeks to live regardless of what you do. A nest you discover in June has a full season of growth ahead of it.
The exception is mild-winter regions. Along the Gulf Coast, in parts of California, and in Hawaii, a colony that never gets frozen out can persist into a second year, accumulate multiple egg-laying queens, and reach populations in the tens of thousands with nests the size of a car door. These “perennial” nests are rare but real, and they are strictly a job for a professional.

Yellow jackets away from the nest — foraging at a picnic table or a hummingbird feeder — are annoying but rarely sting unless trapped against skin. Nearly all serious stinging incidents happen within a few feet of a nest entrance, and the trigger is usually vibration or a blocked entrance rather than a person simply walking past.
The realistic hazards, in rough order of how often they injure people:
Yellow jackets can sting repeatedly, and a disturbed colony releases alarm pheromone that recruits more workers, so incidents involving dozens of stings are entirely possible. Treat 15 to 20 feet as the working exclusion zone around a known active entrance, and stay farther back in late summer when the colony is at peak size and shortest temper. Not every yellow jacket nest needs to be destroyed, and this is a genuine judgment call rather than a formality.
Reasonable to leave alone if: the entrance is more than 20 feet from anywhere people or pets regularly go, it is not in a structure, nobody in the household has a sting allergy, the area can be marked and avoided, and it is already late in the season. Yellow jackets are serious predators of caterpillars, flies, and other garden pests, and the colony will die on its own at the first hard freeze.
Worth treating if: the entrance is near a door, walkway, patio, play area, or anywhere you cannot simply avoid; the nest is inside a wall, attic, or crawl space; the nest is on a route you must mow or maintain; anyone in the household is allergic; or the colony is large and it is only midsummer.

Call a professional when the nest is inside a structure, when you cannot identify a single entrance, when the colony is very large, when anyone at the property is sting-allergic, or simply when you would rather not be within arm’s length of several thousand wasps in the dark. Once a colony is dead, the nest is inert. An abandoned yellow jacket nest carries no residual danger and does not attract a new colony by itself — new queens select sites independently the following spring.
That said, two bits of cleanup are worth doing in late fall or winter:
Paper inside a wall void can attract carpet beetles and other scavengers as it breaks down, so a large in-wall nest is worth physically removing during a repair if the wall is already open. It is not urgent otherwise.
Nest prevention is really cavity prevention, and early spring is the window — a founding queen in April is looking for a hole and can be discouraged. Once a colony is established in June, prevention is no longer the conversation.
Traps have a narrow role. Baited traps placed at the property edge can thin out foraging workers around a patio, but they do not find or kill a nest, and traps placed close to where you sit simply invite more wasps into that space.
What does a yellow jacket nest look like underground? From above, just a hole — usually ½ to 1½ inches wide, with constant two-way wasp traffic and a worn bare patch, but no mound of excavated soil. Below ground sits an enclosed gray paper nest of stacked combs, filling a cavity that is often a former rodent burrow.
How big does a yellow jacket nest get? In most of the US, a mature late-summer nest is somewhere between a soccer ball and a basketball, housing roughly 1,000 to 4,000 workers. Warm-climate perennial colonies are the rare exception and can be dramatically larger.
Do yellow jackets reuse the same nest each year? No. The colony dies at the first hard freeze and the nest is abandoned permanently. A new queen may choose the same location the following spring — a good burrow is a good burrow — but she builds a new nest.
Will yellow jackets sting if I just walk past the nest? Usually not. Defensive attacks are triggered by vibration, by blocking the entrance, or by getting within a few feet. Mowing over a ground nest is the classic trigger; walking by at 20 feet generally is not.
Can I just pour something down the hole? Water, bleach, gasoline, and boiling water are all poor ideas. They rarely reach the whole nest, they put you directly over the entrance, and gasoline in particular is a fire hazard and a groundwater contaminant that is illegal to use this way in many states. Use a labeled product or hire a professional.
How do I know the nest is dead after treatment? Watch the entrance in daylight for two or three days. A treated colony may still show a handful of returning foragers on day one; complete silence during warm midday hours means the nest is finished.
