Wasps by State: Regional Identification & Seasonal Activity Guide

For non-aggressive wasps I've had great luck spraying nests with this Spectracide wasp remover in the evening. For a nest up high in an eave, soffit, or tree, this Gotcha pole adapter clamps onto the can so you can spray from the end of an extension pole and treat the nest from 10+ feet away instead of standing right under it. And for anything aggressive I wear this ridiculous-looking upper torso beekeeping suit and keep my distance. It seems silly, but trust me, I learned the hard way.

The question “what kind of wasp is this?” almost always has a regional answer. Roughly 30,000 wasp species live worldwide, but the handful that build nests on houses, sting people at picnics, or dig burrows in lawns is a much shorter list — and which ones appear in your yard depends heavily on latitude, elevation, and how mild your winters are.

Why Location Changes the Answer

Three regional factors drive almost all of the variation homeowners notice:

  • Season length. Wasp colonies are annual. A fertilized queen overwinters alone, starts a nest in spring, and the colony dies with hard frost. Where frost arrives in September, colonies never grow large. Where it barely arrives at all, they grow for nine or ten months.
  • Colony size at peak. Longer seasons mean bigger colonies, and bigger colonies mean more defensive workers. A late-summer yellowjacket nest in the Gulf South can hold several thousand workers; the same species in Maine may peak in the hundreds.
  • Species mix. Some wasps are strongly regional. Tarantula hawks are a desert Southwest signature. Western yellowjackets dominate the Pacific states. Red paper wasps are a Southeastern staple. European hornets are confined mostly to the East.

A practical consequence: the same calendar advice does not work nationwide. “Wait until late fall to remove a nest” is sound in Michigan and nearly useless in south Florida, where paper wasps may stay active year-round.

Species You Will Find Almost Everywhere

Four groups turn up in most of the lower 48 and account for the majority of homeowner encounters:

Yellowjackets (Vespula and Dolichovespula) — Stocky, bright yellow-and-black, short-legged in flight. Ground and cavity nesters in the Vespula group; aerial gray “football” nests in the Dolichovespula group. The most defensive common wasps and the ones responsible for most late-summer stings. Paper wasps (Polistes) — Slender, long legs dangling in flight, open umbrella-shaped combs under eaves and railings. Far less aggressive than yellowjackets unless the nest itself is disturbed. See the paper wasp hub.

Mud daubers (Sceliphron, Chalybion, Trypoxylon) — Solitary, thread-waisted, building mud tubes or jugs on sheltered walls. They hunt spiders and very rarely sting. See the mud dauber hub.

Cicada killers (Sphecius speciosus) — Very large solitary ground nesters, alarming in appearance but not defensive. Common wherever annual cicadas are. See the cicada killer hub.

Bald-faced hornets (Dolichovespula maculata), despite the name a yellowjacket relative, are also nearly nationwide and build the large gray aerial nests most people picture when they hear “hornet.”

Regional Breakdown

Northeast and New England

Eastern yellowjackets (Vespula maculifrons), German yellowjackets (V. germanica) in urban structures, aerial yellowjackets, bald-faced hornets, and northern paper wasps (Polistes fuscatus) form the core. Two additions matter here: the European hornet (Vespa crabro), the largest true hornet established in North America, concentrated in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, and the European paper wasp (Polistes dominula), an introduced species that has spread widely and often outcompetes native paper wasps around buildings.

Colonies typically found in May, peak in August and September, and collapse after the first hard freezes in October or November. That late-season peak is why most Northeast sting complaints cluster in a four-to-six-week window at summer’s end.

Mid-Atlantic and Appalachia

A transition zone carrying most Northeastern species plus increasing numbers of Polistes carolina and P. metricus. Cicada killer activity is heavy in July and August, especially in sandy or bare soil. Season runs roughly April through late October, with elevation in the Appalachians shortening it noticeably.

Southeast and Gulf States

The most species-rich region for wasps homeowners actually encounter. Red paper wasps (Polistes carolina), P. metricus, P. exclamans, southern yellowjackets (Vespula squamosa), eastern yellowjackets, bald-faced hornets, cicada killers, mud daubers, and velvet ants are all common. Florida adds Polistes major.

Season length is the defining feature: activity from March into November across most of the region, and in south Florida some paper wasp nests persist year-round without a true die-off. Southern yellowjacket colonies occasionally become perennial in mild winters, producing the very large multi-year nests that make regional news. Treat any advice about waiting for frost with skepticism this far south.

Midwest and Great Lakes

Eastern and German yellowjackets, bald-faced hornets, aerial yellowjackets, northern paper wasps, cicada killers, and the striking all-black great black wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus) in prairie and garden settings. European paper wasps have become common around structures. Colonies start in late April or May and are finished by late October.

Great Plains

A similar mix to the Midwest but thinner, with wind and open ground favoring soil-nesting solitary species — cicada killers, digger wasps, and sand wasps. Sharp temperature swings compress the active season, particularly in the Dakotas.

South Central and Desert Southwest

The most distinctive regional fauna. Tarantula hawks (Pepsis and Hemipepsis) are the signature species, with one of the most painful stings of any insect but almost no interest in people. Add western yellowjackets, Polistes species including P. exclamans and P. comanchus, paper wasps in abundance, mud daubers, velvet ants, and very large cicada killers.

Two regional quirks: seasons are extremely long — February or March through November in Texas and the low desert — and midday summer heat suppresses activity, pushing foraging into morning and evening. In the desert, irrigated yards concentrate wasps sharply, because water and prey are scarce elsewhere.

Mountain West

Western yellowjackets (Vespula pensylvanica), aerial yellowjackets, bald-faced hornets, and Polistes aurifer dominate. Elevation is the controlling variable: above roughly 7,000 feet the usable season may be only June through early September, and colonies stay small. Valley floors behave more like the Plains.

Pacific Coast

Western yellowjackets are the defining pest — the aggressive scavengers responsible for most picnic and outdoor-dining conflicts from California through Washington. German yellowjackets nest in urban structures, European paper wasps are widespread and abundant in California, and Polistes aurifer is the common native paper wasp. Mud daubers are common in dry interior areas.

Mild coastal winters extend activity well into fall, particularly in central and southern California. Northern giant hornets (Vespa mandarinia) were detected in northwest Washington beginning in 2019; following an eradication program, USDA and Washington State agriculture officials declared the species eradicated from the United States in December 2024. Homeowners reporting “giant hornets” in the region are almost always seeing cicada killers, European hornets elsewhere in the country, or large native queens.

Alaska and Hawaii

Alaska has a genuinely short list — aerial yellowjackets, Vespula alascensis, and bald-faced hornets in the southern and interior regions — with a compressed June-to-August season and no activity through the long winter.

Hawaii has no native social wasps of these groups. Western yellowjackets and several Polistes species arrived as introductions and, without a winter, remain active year-round, which makes nests larger and removal timing more difficult than on the mainland.

How Region Changes Your Response

Nest removal timing. In the northern half of the country, waiting for a hard freeze genuinely resolves most aerial nests, since colonies die and nests are not reused. In the Deep South, the Gulf Coast, southern California, and Hawaii, that window may never arrive and active management is more often necessary. Either way, nests in wall voids, near entry doors, or belonging to anyone with a sting allergy warrant a professional rather than a wait-and-see approach.

Peak caution period. Late summer through early fall is when colonies are largest and workers shift from hunting insects to scavenging sugars — the phase that brings them to trash cans, drinks, and fallen fruit. That peak lands in August in the North, September and October in the mid-South, and can stretch far later along the Gulf and in the Southwest.

What “large wasp” means locally. A two-inch wasp is a cicada killer in Kansas, a tarantula hawk in Arizona, and quite possibly a European hornet in Pennsylvania. Region narrows the possibilities faster than size alone.

Safety Note

Regional information helps you anticipate what you are dealing with, but it does not change the basic safety rules. Do not attempt removal of ground nests, wall-void nests, or any large late-season colony without protective equipment and an exit plan, and never work from a ladder near an active nest. If anyone in the household has a known sting allergy, hire a professional. Seek emergency care immediately for difficulty breathing, throat or tongue swelling, dizziness, or hives spreading beyond the sting site.
